Dubai: Social media influencers, whether in fashion or politics, were invited today to take part in the Arab Social Media Influencers Summit, an event that aims to share the latest trends and positive uses of social media.

Given the widespread use of social media platforms, the first of its kind event was launched and inaugurated by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

At the summit, some of the most influential social media contributors, international and regional, shared their opinions and observations of how this tool has begun to effect dramatic and far-reaching changes in contemporary societies around the world.

The morning session at the summit started with ‘Dardashat’ (Chit Chat), and it saw big names in the social media world draw on their many experiences and knowledge on the matter. Speakers included Chris Messina, creator of Hashtag, Brandon Statnton, founder of the popular blog ‘Human of New York’ and Emirati singer and Arab Idol judge, Ahlam Al Shamsi.

Many of them revealed facts and anecdotes that offered a deeper insight into the impact of this medium.

The summit also featured the Buthour competition for business start-ups, which saw Zeyad Al Barooni take home Dh100,000 for his Snackable News project.

The first day’s agenda of ther summit concluded with a theatre act featuring stand-up comedian Wonho Chung and Arabic poet and singer Abdul Rahman Mohammad.

The second day of the summit will see the launch of the Arab Social Media Influencers Forum where different topics will be discussed by social media personalities and experts.

The forum will include sessions on the hidden power of social networks, creating viral content through new media, design and fashion on social media, the future of Twitter, using social media to promote better eating habits and much more.
