Dubai: Dubai Cares recently donated 40,000 books donated by UAE residents to Syrian refugees in Jordan.

The books were donated in partnership with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and Save the Children.

“The team at Dubai Cares is currently making sure that the remaining books reach the underprivileged and most deserving of children in the coming year,” said Dubai Cares chief Tareq Al Gurg.

Donated by the UAE community as part of the Reading Nation campaign, a campaign launched this summer, the books are in Arabic and English.

Nihal Kanaan, a Jordan-based Save the Children official, said that the donation “assists us in making sure that every last child has a fair chance in life”.

Reading Nation’s initial target was to give five million books to children in refugee camps and underprivileged students in schools around the world.

So far, over 8.2 milllion books have been donated and are currently being distributed.
