Abu Dhabi: More than 150 motorists had their licences seized in Al Ain last month the Al Ain Traffic and Patrols Section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate announced on Wednesday.

Major Salah Abdullah Al Humairi, Chief of the Al Ain Traffic Section, said the motorists had clocked up more than 24 black points. Violations included dangerous overtaking by truck drivers (resulting in 24 black points) and reckless driving (resulting in 12 black points.) Another serious offence included fleeing the scene after causing an accident that resulted in causalities.

“Revoking driving licences is aimed at prevent reckless drivers from posing a risk to themselves and to other road users for a short period of time. For a first offence, a licence is withdrawn for a period of three months, six months in the second instance, then for a year and then it may be revoked permanently if the driver commits a fourth offence. If he continues to drive with a cancelled licence, he shall be punished and transferred to the concerned authority for investigation, then to the General Prosecution to render the appropriate sentence,” Major Al Humairi added.

He urged motorists to abide by traffic laws, particularly the speed limit.
