Ramallah: Israelis on social media have lashed out at a group of Holocaust survivors who have placed an ad in the New York Times condemning Israel’s latest massacre in Gaza.

Ironically, some Israelis have actually called for the death of the Holocaust survivors for publishing the ad. In a letter published as an advertisement in Saturday’s New York Times, 327 Holocaust survivors and descendants of survivors have condemned “ ... the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza” and call for a boycott of Israel.

The letter was sponsored by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network.

Written in response to an advertisement circulated worldwide via news sources by Elie Wiesel which accused Hamas of “child sacrifice” and which compared the group to the Nazis, the letter states, “…we are disgusted and outraged by Elie Wiesel’s abuse of our history in these pages to justify the unjustifiable: Israel’s wholesale effort to destroy Gaza and the murder of more than 2,000 Palestinians, including many hundreds of children. Nothing can justify bombing UN shelters, homes, hospitals and universities. Nothing can justify depriving people of electricity and water.”

The letter also condemns the US and the western world for failing to stand up to Israel over its actions.

“Genocide begins with the silence of the world,” it declares. “We must raise our collective voices and use our collective power to bring about an end to all forms of racism, including the ongoing genocide of Palestinian people. We call for an immediate end to the siege against and blockade of Gaza. We call for the full economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel.”

The letter uses the experiences of the Jews imprisoned and killed in the Holocaust as a call to action against the unjust treatment of any ethnic group. It concludes: “‘Never again’ must mean NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE!”
