Ramallah: Israeli right-wing activist Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who was seriously injured in November this year after being shot at by a Palestinian, has announced he is in the running for a potential Likud Party candidature in the Israeli elections to be held on March 17, 2015.
Glick is expected to use his bid for parliament to continue to press for Jewish claims to Al Haram Al Sharif.
The controversial rabbi is not expected to make it into the Knesset even if he is chosen on the Likud ticket as the party is expected to get 25 seats at the most and, if he were to be listed, it would be at number 33.
Glick seems resigned to his situation. In comments to the Israeli daily, the Yediot Ahranoth, he said, “I want to run for an unrealistic spot. I want to preserve my spot in the Likud and maintain my presence in the party.”
Glick has long agitated for the rights of Jews to enter Al Haram Al Sharif and pray there. This is currently forbidden under the status quo agreement under which the site is managed.
Glick has said he will continue to “be someone who is very radical in his opinions. Radical in my demand for human rights, radical in my demand for zero tolerance in the face of violence and terror and in my demand the police be honest and fair.”
