Manama: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the killing of Jordanian pilot Muath Al Kasaesbeh, adding that it would call for an emergency meeting of its executive committee to discuss further ways to curb terrorism.

In a statement it released following the burning alive of the Jordanian captive, the Jeddah-based organisation of 57 countries in four continents that its secretary general Iyad Ameen Madani “condemned the ugly crime committed by the terrorist group.”

“This crime utterly disregards the rights of prisoners Islam has decreed, as well as the human moral standards for war and treatment of prisoners,” the secretary general said.

Madani extended his “deepest condolences” to Al Kaseasbeh family and to the Jordanian leadership, government, and people.

“It is profoundly saddening to see the depth of malaise to which parts of the Middle East region have descended, the intellectual decay, the political fragmentation and the abuse of Islam, the great religion of mercy and its great Prophet ,” the statement posted on the OIC website said.

“The Secretariat of the OIC will call for an emergency meeting of its Executive Committee, composed of the troika of the Summit, the troika of the Council of Foreign Ministers and the host country, to cement the OIC’s position and action to curb terrorism, extremism and hate speech, and to address the contexts that breed, lead to and exploit them.”

The OIC will also call for an urgent meeting of the International Islamic Fiqh (Jurisprudence) Academy to further outline Muslim jurisdiction towards this phenomenon, Madani said.

In the Saudi capital Riyadh, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Abdul Lateef Bin Rashid Al Zayani strongly condemned the “heinous execution” of Al Kaseasbeh.

“Such an atrocious crime clearly proves that the killers of Al Kasaesbeh are devoid of any humanitarian values,” the GCC chief said.

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The member countries have condemned the killing in official statements.

Al Zayani reiterated the GCC’s support to Jordan “in everything that consolidates its security and stability and offered his condolences to the family of the martyr who passed away while defending his homeland and nation.”

Offering his condolences to the government and people of Jordan and to the Arab Army of Jordan’s officers and personnel, the GCC chief said “such hideous crime would strengthen everybody’s willpower and determination to fight this extremist group of terrorists.”
