DUBAI: Mystery continues to shroud the death of former Royal Navy sailor Elwood McIlwraith 29, who plunged to his death from the 42-storey Laguna Tower in Dubai’s Jumeirah Lakes Towers district last Saturday. Almost a week later, his friends and well-wishers remain in a state of disbelief.

“Elwood was a very happy man and there was no reason for him to commit suicide. He just married in February and I cannot imagine why he would take his life,” said one of McIlwraith’s colleagues at the Smart Fitness gym where he had been a physical instructor for women for about two years. “I think it was just a terrible accident. Elwood was very popular person and well loved and we miss him terribly,” she said.

The exact circumstances surrounding his death, though, remain dubious as reports suggest it isn’t clear if he lived in the building where he fell.

The devastated widow who, XPRESS has learnt, also works in the UAE, and friends are currently awaiting the final reports from Dubai Police.

This is the third instance of a Briton in a fatal fall in the emirate in as many months.

Last month, Emirates airline stewardess Evelyn Clarke, 30, fell to her death from a Bur Dubai building. Abbie Emmett, 27, earlier plunged from the window of her fourth-floor honeymoon suite after a night out with her new husband, motorcycle champion Sean Emmett, 43.
