Cairo: A porn flick allegedly filmed next to the world-famous Pyramids has outraged Egyptians, prompting antiquities authorities to pledge an inquiry.

News of the purported film was broken this week by Osama Karara of the non-governmental group, the Popular Front for Defence of Antiquities.

He claimed that the film had been shot in the area in Russian with English subtitles, and was uploaded on the internet some nine months ago. According to Karara, a tour guide and a security guard “can be clearly seen” in the ten-minute film.

“The film was shot in broad daylight and with the knowledge of the officials in charge of the area,” Karara said in TV remarks.

He alleged that surveillance cameras in the area, one of Egypt’s major tourist attractions, had been “deliberately” put out of action.

An Egyptian lawyer has meanwhile filed a legal complaint against senior police chiefs in the area, accusing them of facilitating the filming of porn scenes and damaging the country’s name.

On Thursday, Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Al Demati said the filming was illegally conducted by a woman tourist in the Pyramids area. He added in an official statement that the incident had been referred to the public prosecutor.

The official said that new surveillance cameras are being installed as part of a plan to overhaul the area, home to the Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Condemning the incident, prominent rights advocate Jamal Eid warned pro-government media against blaming it on the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

“Who will be the first media figure to come up and say the Ikhwan [Brotherhood] were the ones who shot the film so as to bring down Egypt?!” Eid said sarcastically in a tweet.

Egyptian authorities and loyal media have frequently blamed the Islamist group for deadly attacks and unrest in the country since the army deposed president Mohammad Mursi of the Brotherhood since 2013.

Tourism, one of Egypt’s key foreign currency earners, has been hard hit by four years of turmoil since the 2011 uprising that forced long-time president Hosni Mubarak out of power.
