Cairo: Egyptian warplanes early Monday attacked targets of militants linked to the radical Daesh in neighbouring Libya in retaliation for the killing of 21 Egyptians there, the army said.

The strikes targeted militants’ training camps and arms depots, according to a military statement.

It said that the strikes came to “defend Egypt’s security and stability as well as in response to criminal acts”.

The army added that the jets returned home safely after they carried out their mission, without giving further details.

Egyptian official television showed footage of fighter jets taking off.

The strikes come hours after Egyptian President vowed retaliations for the 21 Egyptian workers beheaded in Libya.

Extremists, who have pledged allegiance to Daesh, released a video Sunday night showing decapitation of the Coptic Egyptians kidnapped in the Libyan city of Sirte more than a month ago. The executions generated massive anger in Egypt.
