Cairo: At least 30 people were killed Saturday when their bus fell off a bridge into a roadside canal near Cairo, security officials said.

The accident took place in Giza, south of Cairo, where the bus was transporting workers of a construction company to their workplace in the western city of October 6, the officials added. At least 50 workers were aboard the bus.

“At least 30 bodies have been recovered so far,” an official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media. “Rescue teams are searching for the others.”

The cause of the mishap was not immediately known. The crash comes two weeks after eight people died when a school bus, was hit by a train on the eastern outskirts of Cairo.

Egypt has one of the world’s highest road accidents, mainly blamed on reckless driving and poor roads.
