Manama: More than 80 per cent of respondents in a poll posted by the Doha-based Al Jazeera channels said they welcomed the “victories of Daesh.”

According to the poll results posted on the site of the pan-Arab channel, 30,272 respondents, representing 81.2 per cent of the total, answered “Yes” to the question “Do you support the victories of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria?”

Those who answered negatively numbered 7,013, representing 18.8 per cent of the voters in the poll opened on May 23 and expected to close on May 29.

Al Jazeera, launched in 1995 in Qatar, regularly carries online polls and posts the results, but stresses that they do not carry the views of the channel.

Daesh terror group which appeared in 2014 in the anarchic swathes of land straddling Syria and Iraq, has recently taken major cities in both countries in the last week with an unexpected ability to rout regular troops with apparent ease.

The group also claimed it was behind the suicide attack that targeted worshippers in a mosque on Friday in a small town in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.

According to official figures, 21 worshippers were killed and more than 101 were wounded in the unprecedented attack on Saudi soil.
