Washington: The White House rushed on Friday to correct a diplomatic blooper after an official transcript listed Jerusalem as part of Israel, contradicting a delicate US policy that takes no position on the city’s status.

A transcript of US President Barack Obama’s eulogy of former Israeli president Shimon Peres gave “Jerusalem, Israel” as the dateline.

Hours later, the White House issued a corrected transcript listing merely “Jerusalem” and with “Israel” crossed out with a line.

Israel annexed Jerusalem in 1967 and since then have occupied the holy city, oppressing its Palestinian residents.

US policy refuses to recognise any nation’s sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem until the city’s status is resolved through negotiations.
