Manama: Kuwait will be the guest of honour at the 10th Palestinian International Book Fair that opens on May 7, Palestinian Minister of Culture Ehab Bseiso has said.

Kuwait’s participation will be highly significant and will highlight its role in promoting Arab culture and creativity, the minister said, adding that his Kuwaiti counterpart Shaikh Salman Sabah Al Salem Al Humoud Al Sabah will open the Kuwaiti stand at the fair.

A significant dimension of the fair that runs until May 17 is that Arab intellectuals will come to Palestine “to be among us, in an obvious defiance of all policies to isolate the Palestinian people”, Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) quoted Bseiso as saying.

“We also want to send a message to Arab intellectuals and to the international community that despite all the challenges we are facing as a result of the occupation crimes and colonisation, we are able to organise a cultural event through the conjugated efforts of the culture ministry, partners and Palestinian intellectuals,” the minister said.

Up to 400 publishers and 160 Arab and Palestinian dignitaries will take part in the fair held under the theme of “Palestine Reads.”

Around 500,000 titles will be on show at the fair to be opened in Ramallah on the birthday of Palestinian poet Tawfiq Zyad.
