Cairo: The flight data recorder of the EgyptAir Flight MS804 passenger plane, which crashed into the Mediterranean Sea last month, was found and retrieved on Friday, Egyptian investigators said.

The recorder,  the second of the two black boxes on board the aircraft, was recovered early Friday by the ship Lethbridge John operated by the Mauritius-based Deep Ocean Search, the investigation committee said in a statement.

“The device was retrieved in several stages. The vessel equipment managed to pull the part of the recorder containing the crucial memory unit,” the panel added.

The retrieval came a day after the committee announced recovering the plane’s cockpit voice recorder.  The two black boxes will be analyzed to help determine the cause of the May 19 crash.

The examination of the voice recorder started Friday in Cairo, according to aviation sources.

The Airbus A320 plunged into the Mediterranean with 66 people on board while travelling from Paris to Cairo.

Egypt said a terror act was more likely than a technical failure behind the crash.
