Cairo: An explosion occurred early Saturday near the Omani Cultural Centre in Cairo, causing no casualties, police said, the latest in a string of attacks blamed on Islamist militants.

The explosion was caused by a home-made bomb placed under a parked car in the quarter of Al Mohandessin, the police added.

Six cars were damaged as a result.

Police cordoned off the site of the blast and are checking surveillance cameras of nearby stores for clues, security sources said.

Initial investigations revealed that three police officers are living in a building in the area where the explosion took place, they added.

There was no claim of responsibility.

Egypt has experienced a series of attacks, targeting mainly security forces, since the army’s 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi following massive protests against his rule.

The attacks have died down in recent months.
