Sana’a: A contingent of ground forces from the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Al Houthi militants has pushed into oil-rich Marib province, a tribal leader and witnesses said.

Dozens of armored vehicles, tanks and other heavy equipment arrived in the central Marib region Saturday from a border outlet between Yemen and Saudi Arabia, according to Saleh Al Anjaf, chief of the Marib Tribes Alliance, which is fighting Al Houthis and their allies.

Mohammad Al Sharif, a resident and witness, said he saw “huge forces” entering Marib. Al Sahwa news website, affiliated with the Islah Islamist party, said coalition forces entered Yemen from Saudi Arabia on Saturday from the southeastern province of Hadramout before making their way to Marib.

Tribal leader Al Anjaf said the new forces would play an important role in defeating Al Houthis and their allies.

UAE troops were in the deployment in Marib, Saudi newspaper Asharq Alawsat reported Sunday, citing unidentified Yemeni people.
