Geneva: The Co-operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, GCC, and the Arab Coalition for supporting legitimacy in Yemen remain committed to protecting the Yemeni people, backing the internationally-recognised legitimate government and meeting the humanitarian and development needs of Yemen based on their fraternal bonds with Yemen and the fact that they share a common destiny with their neighbour, said a statement by the six-member Arab regional bloc during a high-level pledging conference for Yemen, held Tuesday in Geneva, Switzerland.
The GCC continues to be the largest humanitarian donor for Yemen and prioritises reconstruction, development and economic recovery in the country as well as its economic integration with the GCC, according to the GCC statement delivered by Bahraini Assistant Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Faisal Bin Jabur Al Dosari at the High-Level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen.
“Aid provided by the GCC humanitarian agencies and funds account for more than 85 per cent of total aid received by Yemen,” he noted.
“The GCC members also give great attention to coordination and dialogue in relief and humanitarian work,” he added, while urging for wider coordination between the United Nations’ aid agencies and the Yemeni government.
Aid for Yemen should not be politicised and humanitarian aid delivery should be facilitated, he stressed.
The GCC believes in diplomacy and peaceful solutions to conflicts, Al Dosari further said.
The six members of the GCC are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.
The High-Level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen was co-hosted by the governments of Switzerland and Sweden, and was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva
