Abu Dhabi: A South African doctor charged with killing a boy due to medical malpractice was given Dh100,000 bail on Wednesday until a committee decides on the doctor’s responsibility in the incident.
S.D.K. was charged with malpractice which led to the death of a child with leukaemia under his watch as a visiting doctor in Shaikh Khalifa Medical City in 2002.
The doctor has also been charged with forging a prescription to allegedly cover up his errors.
The court has revealed that the case is not ready for adjudication due to the large amount of evidence which needs to be reviewed.
Therefore, a higher committee is to be set up to make a decision on the technicalities in terms of whether he contributed to the death of the child.
However, the court has verified the defendant’s claims that the three-year-old’s blood count went from 66 per cent to 73 per cent, proving that he did give the child blood units.
Investigations are still underway to determine whether the blood clot found in the victim’s brain could have been the real cause of her death.
Additionally, the doctor reminded the court that an autopsy had not been performed on the girl and so the reason for her death has yet to be determined.
The doctor is expected to be released on Sunday after bail is presented. The court session has been scheduled for November 20.
