Manama: Saudis have heaped praise on an employer who paid the expenses for the marriage of the family domestic helper and recruited her husband to work for him.

The Saudi employer, Twairish Al Shammari, said that the helper from Sri Lanka told him she wanted to marry an Indian man whom she happened to meet through her brother in Riyadh.

She said that the Indian man, who was her brother’s colleague, would be forced to return to India after his contract expired.

Al Shammari decided to help them and recruited the Indian man so that the pair would not be separated, Saudi news site Al Marsad reported, citing a programme on a private television.

The employer said that after observing the new employee for eight months, he decided to help the duo with their marriage. He flew to Sri Lanka where he met the family of the domestic helper. The family agreed to have their daughter marry the Indian man, prompting the employer to pledge to pay all the expenses for the marriage.

He also decided to build additional rooms in his house to accommodate the new couple.

According to Al Marsad, the bride and groom expressed their gratitude to the employer for making their marriage possible and for assisting them at all stages.

The groom said they would name their first male baby after their employer.

In their comments, social media users praised the Saudi employer for his generosity and his commitment to help others.

“May God bless you and all your loved ones,” Mujammad posted. “You have done something marvelous and we shall pray for your happiness.”

Tati said that Al Shammari had presented a shining example of compassion that has become a rare thing in relations between employers and helpers. “May you always be happy since you have made so many people happy through your selflessness and generosity,” she said.

However, some argued that Al Shimmari should have used the money and time to help Saudis in need. “We are helping foreigners instead of assisting fellow country people. This is a shocking matter. We know that charity starts at home,” said Itinerant Saudi.
