Manama: A driver who drifted on two wheels in front of a security check-point in Saudi Arabia has been arrested.

“Investigators with the Taif police have been able to identify and arrest a Saudi citizen in his 20s for driving his car on two wheels,” Ati Al Qarshi, the spokesperson for the police in the Makkah Region, said. “The reckless driver drifted the car in front of a security check point. He will now be referred to the competent authorities. The car, which did not have number plates, was impounded,” he said.

A nine-second video clip of the reckless stunt on a busy road and under the eyes of the police went viral on the internet, sparking wide condemnation of the driver.

“This driver is totally oblivious of the dangers and pains he could cause through his reckless behaviour,” Sultan, a blogger, posted. “He should be named and shamed and sentenced to cleaning streets and bathrooms.”

Another blogger, Omar, said that it was “an act of utmost stupidity and carelessness”.

“He wanted to show off in front of the police who are working hard to preserve public order and protect people’s lives and it is good that he was arrested.”

Abu Hamza called for making the driver undergo rigorous military training.

“We have young people who need to engage in positive activities to help them change their attitudes towards life,” he said. “They should be handed over to the army to instil in them a true sense of self-discipline and a greater standard of commitment to the community.”
