Manama: A group of students who mocked their teacher and bothered him by making strange noises inside a classroom in the Saudi capital Riyadh have been suspended.

The students will not be allowed to finish the academic year or to sit for the end-of-the-year exams, the central committee for students at the Ministry of Education said.

The decision was based on the report presented by an ad hoc committee set up by the ministry to look into the incident that was filmed and posted on the internet.

The students will not have access to their past grades and they will not be allowed to enrol at any other school for the remainder of the term, thus losing a full academic year, Saudi daily Al Riyadh reported on Tuesday.

The ministry said that the school where the incident happened will be closely monitored starting the new academic year and that the management, teacher and students will be under special observation.

The students came under heavy criticism two weeks ago when a short clip of their misbehaviour with their teacher, seemingly an expatriate, was posted on social media.

Several users deplored the incident and called for punitive action, insisting they wanted to see the students severely reprimanded for their “outrageous” attitudes.
