Manama: A woman in Saudi Arabia has been praised on the internet after she gave her husband a rare emotional hug in public for deciding to quit smoking.

“My wife and I were shopping in Makkah when we entered a hall where an anti-smoking society was celebrating the anti-tobacco day,” the husband said.

“It was there and then that I decided to quit smoking and to keep away from this deadly plague. I destroyed the cigarettes that were with me and said I would under a treatment by the Kafa [Enough] Society,” the unidentified husband told Saudi daily Al Medina.

He said that he was with his wife earlier at the Grand Mosque where he prayed to God to help him stop smoking.

“This is the real image of the Saudi woman, not the one that some people try to depict wrongly,” Truth, a blogger, posted. “She is the flower that gives off a beautiful scent to life through her compassion and support to her husband.”

For Raghoud, another blogger, the wife deserves to be applauded.

“May God prolong the love between them and they both deserve the hug and the kisses. May all smokers get rid of their cigarettes,” she said.

The Pen of Truth said that those who opposed the woman’s behaviour were wrong.

“Their lives are empty of love and feelings. They usually want to live in dark places or in caves,” the blogger posted.

Kafa is running a clinic to treat smokers in Saudi Arabia and help them give up smoking. The society says that it provides people with the medical and enlightening information about the dangers of smoking and drug addiction.
