Manama: Social media users have heaped praise on a high school student in Saudi Arabia for returning a bag containing more than SR30,000 (Dh29,364) to its owner.
Abdullah Bin Gazi Sahaqi, a first grade student at Abu Areesh High School in the southern area of Jazan found the woman’s bag that contained SR30,270 and an ID of its owner.
He urged his father to help him identify and locate the owner so that they could return the bag to her, local news site Sabq reported on Monday.
Using the information on the official documents inside the bag, they were able to identify the owner and to contact her.
The owner reportedly expressed her gratitude to Abdullah, believed to be 15 years old, and thanked him for his honesty and integrity.
“Abdullah is a brilliant example of the honest and well-educated student,” Eisa Al Hakami, the head of the education district in Jazan, said. “His act was a wonderful application of the genuine values of Islam and a reflection of high morals. The district will honour him for his honesty and integrity,” he said.
Social media users were equally pleased with Abdullah’s attitude, praising him for returning the bag and the money.
“He is a shining example of how our young people should be,” Abu Abdullah, a blogger, posted. “His behaviour is a concretisation of how all Muslims should be as ordered by God. Honesty and integrity are not luxuries, but essential components of our character,” he said.
Hassan, another commenter, said that he was not sure whether the bag owner rewarded him for returning it to her.
“I pray that she rose to his selfless act and generously rewarded him,” he said. “That is the very least she could do after getting her money and bag back.”
For Dreamer, another blogger, Abdullah’s attitude was rather unexpected.
“I shall always pray for this boy because what he did is today highly unusual,” he posted. “You rarely hear about a young boy who finds SR30,000 and does not keep the money or part of it. It is a large amount, and Abdullah’s behaviour is truly remarkable,” he said.
