Manama: A Saudi man has given his first wife a four-wheel-drive vehicle and 50,000 riyals (Dh48,966) to motivate her to come home after she left when she heard he took a second wife.

At a family reconciliation meeting that brought together the headman of the village, some of the man’s relatives and the brothers of the angry wife, the husband presented the keys of the 2014 SUV and the 50,000 riyals as a gesture of goodwill, local news site Al Jazeera reported.

The husband said that he presented the gift to make sure that his first wife, who had three children from him, came home.

He added that he wanted to please her and to make sure they continued together as husband and wife.

The marriage with the second woman was bound to happen, he said, without explaining.

Online readers welcomed the goodwill gesture, but many said that the husband should have talked about the second marriage with the first wife before it happened.

Some readers, however, expressing a conservative view, said that the man should not have compromised.

In a separate case, social networks reported that a Saudi man had offered his wife a plot of land worth 600,000 riyals to reward her for looking after his ill mother for years.

Al Weam website on Sunday said that the husband wanted to highlight his wife’s selfless devotion to his mother who died last month.
