Cairo: Unidentified kidnappers on Thursday freed a Saudi businessman in an Egyptian city after seizing him 11 days ago, the Middle East News Agency (Mena) reported.

The 69-year-old was kidnapped on a road linking the coastal city of Esmailia and Cairo last month while he was en route to the Cairo airport.

At the time, police reportedly found his car and mobile phone at the site where the abduction was believed to have taken police.

The abductors released the man and his driver on a road outside the coastal city of Suez after police had tightened the noose around them, Mena said.

Both men were in good health, the agency said without giving details.

Private newspaper Al Youm Al Saba, citing an unnamed security official, said that the kidnappers had released the man after his family paid a ransom of five million Egyptian pounds (Dh2.6 million).

Egyptian media identified the businessman as Ali Hassan, saying he owns plantations and juice factories in Esmailia.

Since coming to office in 2014, President Abdul Fattah Al Sissi has sought to re-establish security and revitalise economy battered by years of unrest.
