Manama: Social media users in Saudi Arabia have heaped praise on the sons of a Saudi man who was killed in a car accident for insisting on freeing the detained driver before burying their father.

Hmood Al Haidairis said that he was driving his car in the northern city of Hael when a man in his 80s suddenly walked across the road.

He added that he could not avoid the pedestrian and hit him.

“I took him to hospital and although I rushed, he passed away before we could reach any doctor,” he said, quoted by Ain Hael news site.

The traffic police later arrested the driver and kept him in custody.

However, the sons of the victim reportedly went to the police station and insisted on pardoning the driver and allowing him to go home.

They said that they would not leave the station unless he was with them, arguing that the accident was a matter of fate and that “what was meant to happen happened.”

The driver urged the sons to go ahead with the burial of their father and asked them to delay their pardon until the next day, but they refused and requested the authorities to speed up the paper work, the site reported.

He was eventually released and the sons buried their father.

“I am so grateful to them for their selfless act,” Al Haidairis said. “They reinforced my faith that goodness does exist and they will always remain in my prayers,” he said.

Kashef 59, a blogger, said that the sons proved that they were sensible and that they wanted justice.

“They did well by insisting on the release of the driver. They were not obviously interested in worldly rewards and may God grant them their wishes,” he said.

Another blogger, writing under the moniker of Ghorbal, said that the sons proved to the community that they truly cared about their father.

“May God help them with the painful loss and reward them for their compassionate act,” he said.

Heart Fuse, another user, lauded the sons for not being interested in blood money.

“There are some people who exploit tragedies to make money. These sons showed that they truly loved their father and that they did not care about receiving money from the poor driver,” he said.
