Manama: Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Germany in protest over “incorrect” remarks made by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel during a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart.

“Such remarks provoke the surprise and disapproval of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which considers them as aimless and based on false information and would not help in bringing about stability in the region,” an official source at Saudi Arabia’s ministry of foreign affairs was quoted as saying by the Saudo Press Agency (SPA) early on Saturday.

“The statements have provoked surprise and condemnation and Saudi Arabia considers that such random statements based on misinformation do not support stability in the region and that they do not represent the position of the friendly German government, which is seen by the Kingdom's government as a reliable partner in the war on terrorism and extremism and in the pursuit of security and stability in the region.”

The Kingdom has decided to summon its ambassador to Germany for consultations. It will also hand over the German Ambassador to the Kingdom a memorandum of protest against the outrageous and unjustified statements, the official added.
