Manama: Saudi customs officers have foiled bids to smuggle more than 15 million Captagon pills into the country since the start of Ramadan.
The latest haul occurred this week at the northern border checkpoint of Al Haditha where customs officers seized 4.9 million pills, customs officers said.
The pills were concealed inside cartons of eggs being imported into the kingdom, local news site Sabq reported on Thursday.
“A customs officer was conducting a routine check of a large truck that was bringing in the cartons of eggs into the kingdom,” Ebrahim Al Enezi, the general director of customs at Al Haditha, said. “He discovered the Captagon pills carefully hidden inside the trays of eggs. The appropriate measures in such cases were then taken,” he said, quote by Sabq.
According to the senior officer, Saudi customs officers are ready to deal with all attempts to smuggle in banned substances.
“Regardless of the ruses and tricks smugglers use to sneak drugs and other items into the country, we are ready to deal with them. We have enough expertise to foil their attempts,” he said.
According to Sabq, attempts to smuggle in around 11 million Captagon pills were also foiled this week.
