Manama: The wedding memories of a Saudi couple have been marred by the burglary of their home on the evening of their marriage.

“The burglar not only stole items from our home, he also robbed us of a great joy, maybe the greatest occasion in my life,” Abdul Aziz Bin Idriss Al Driss, the groom, said. “On Friday evening, and following a great evening of celebrations with relatives and friends, I was shocked to discover that our new home had been burgled,” he said, quoted by local news site Sabq on Tuesday.

Wedding celebrations in Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries are not mixed. The men traditionally attend a reception while the women have their separate, invariably much more lavish, party.

The burglar reportedly broke into the newlyweds’ home through the front door and made his way into the bedroom where he took whatever valuables he found.

“The haul includes a laptop, an iPad, two watches, around 30,000 riyals (Dh29,379) and some other valuables,” Abdul Aziz said.

The groom alerted the police who sent in a team to launch an investigation into the robbery.

“I hope they will arrest him quickly so that I can recuperate the stolen items,” he said. “Unfortunately, the burglar has marred the special day,” he said.

Online readers sought to raise the groom’s morale, urging him to forget the incident and to focus on having a happy life with his bride.
