Manama: A dish of Mandi, the traditional aromatic rice made either with chicken or lamb, was sold for SR113,600 (approximately Dh111258.49).

The sale was part of a public auction on the island of Tarout, in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, to raise funds to improve the living conditions of the orphans and the needy.

Abdullah Al Alaiwat, the head of the local charity society that organized the fund-raising said the objective was to reinforce the partnership and cooperation among all people.

“The total income of the fund-raising held just before the suhoor (pre-dawn) mean was SR136,550,” he said, quoted by Saudi daily Okaz on Monday. “We wanted to reach out to the community and ensure the participation of all people in the activities of our society, as well.”

Online users welcomed the idea and praised the spirit of togetherness through the fund-raising activity.

However, more conservative voices, not familiar with such activities, said that benevolent people did not need to go through fund-raising events and should donate money directly to the society.

Muslims throughout the world tend to be more generous and compassionate during the fasting month of Ramadan when the focus is on piety and acts of generosity.
