Manama: A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a father to 90 days in jail for refusing to allow his daughter to visit her divorced mother.

The girl’s maternal grandmother had filed a petition in the city of Yanbu in western Saudi Arabia seeking visitation rights for her and the divorced mother.

The judge granted the plea and the girl was allowed to visit her mother and grandmother living in Buraidah in the north-central part of the kingdom twice a month, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Thursday.

However, the girl’s father prevented her from visiting her mother, prompting the grandmother to take the case to the Enforcement Court in Buraidah and ask for the application of the ruling issued by the Yanbu court.

Although the father was granted five days to comply, he refused to allow his daughter to see her mother and the Enforcement Court ordered that he be jailed, banned from travelling and suspended his electronic government services.

The judge warned the father that he would not be released at the end of the three-month jail term unless he agreed to comply with the Yanbu court verdict to allow his daughter to visit her mother.
