Manama: Two Europeans were among terrorists that Saudi Arabia has detained, a Saudi daily said on Sunday.

The Belgian and Italian nationals were held during a three-day “security operation” conducted by the Saudi authorities this month to arrest around 50 terrorists that had been added to the Saudi list, Al Watan reported.

The terrorists are from three Arab countries, two European countries and from countries that could not be determined.

“On day one, the authorities arrested 18 terrorists, including two from countries that could not be determined,” the report said. “The others were 15 Saudis and one Yemeni. On the second day, five Saudis and four Yemenis were arrested.”

The two Europeans were held on the third day, alongside 15 Saudis, two Yemenis and one Palestinian, the daily said.

The report did not mention where the terrorists were arrested.

Commenting on the news, readers of the report said terrorism had no nationality or specific religion, adding that it has become a global phenomenon since terrorist groups can communicate easily and quickly across boundaries and locations.

They said that terrorist ideologies were always glossed over to make them attractive and to lure young people into adopting them.

“The world has to seriously work together to address the issue by at least reducing the number of followers and drying up their finance sources,” Hamad Al Samili posted on Al Watan site.
