Manama: A taxi driver had a lucky escape when his car plunged into a six-metre deep hole.

The driver, reportedly from an Asian country, was driving along the King Abdullah Road in the Red Sea city of Jeddah when he saw a car driving directly towards him.

In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, he swerved to the right, but the car fell into a hole dug by workers as part of an electricity cable extension project.

The driver emerged from the crash without major injuries, local news site Sabq reported on Tuesday.

Witnesses said they were glad the driver was fine after the accident, but expressed shock that such a large hole on the side of a busy road in central Jeddah was not fenced.

They said that the company undertaking the works should have been more vigilant and wondered what would have happened if the car had been transporting children and women, the report said.

Comments blamed the company for not making sure the hole was well protected to avoid turning it into a grave. However, some comments also blamed the driver for either speeding or not driving carefully enough to brake on time ahead of the hole.
