Manama: A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced 14 men and women to 20 lashes each for their part in a family brawl.
The fight occurred after a Saudi man took his new bride home where he already has a wife.
The situation degenerated into a fight between the two women, and the husband allegedly beat up his first wife, told her he was divorcing her and pushed her down the stairs.
Both women called members of their families who rushed to the house, resulting in a brawl in which 14 people were involved, the court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah heard.
Two others, both old women, were acquitted as the charges against them could not be evidenced, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Wednesday.
The husband was sentenced to 50 lashes.
However, he faced a second legal case after his first wife insisted that he pushed her down the stairs after he said he was divorcing her and that she suffered fractures in her thigh that necessitated, according to a medical report, treatment for at least three months.
However, the husband denied he caused the fractures, but the court sentenced him to pay a financial compensation of 80,000 Saudi riyals (about about $21,330) to his wife for assaulting her.
He challenged the verdict, but the court of appeals upheld it.
According to the daily, the brawl case had remained in the courts for about two years.
