Manama: A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a supporter of the Daesh terror group to 10 years in jail.

The case documents showed that the defendant, a Saudi national, had planned to travel to war zones in Syria to join the group and carry out a suicide attack.

Investigations concluded that he had posted several tweets expressing sympathy with Daesh and supporting its terror attacks. He also used the microblog to insult the rulers of Saudi Arabia and to pledge allegiance to the leaders of Daesh and to the group structure, Saudi daily Okaz reported on Wednesday.

The defendant prepared, saved and sent statements that could undermine public order and was a follower of several accounts that glorified and promoted the terror group. He was particularly close to two people who shared his deviant ideology and encouraged people to join Daesh, the court was told.

The defendant was also found to consume drugs, hashish and banned substances.

The judge in his ruling ordered the confiscation of the mobile used by the defendant and the shutting down of his microblog account.

He also ruled that the defendant be given 70 lashes for consuming drugs.

The defendant was barred from leaving Saudi Arabia for ten years after serving his prison term.

As Saudi Arabia presses ahead with its relentless fight against terrorism and its supporters, courts in the kingdom invariably rule that prison terms be followed by a travel ban equal to the time spent in jail for Saudi nationals and by deportation for foreigners immediately after serving their time.

In April, a Saudi court sentenced a woman to six years in jail after she was found guilty of attempting to leave the Kingdom clandestinely with her children and join the Daesh terror group.

The woman, a Saudi national in her 30s, was also ordered to pay a fine of SR1,000 (about $268) and not to leave the kingdom for six years following her release from jail.

Her social media accounts were shut down.

Her two accomplices, both Syrian men, were also found guilty by the court in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

The first accomplice was sentenced to five years in jail on charges of coordinating the smuggling of the woman and her children out of the kingdom.

He is to be deported after serving his time in jail.

The second accomplice was sentenced to four years on charges of coordinating with the first accomplice to smuggle the woman and her children into Yemen ahead of moving to Syria and joining the terror group.

He was also ordered to pay SR 6,200 (about $1,660) in fines. The defendant is to be deported after serving his sentence.
