Manama: Qatar’s interior ministry is preparing two villas at the central prison to enable prisoners to spend the full day or hours with their relatives in a family atmosphere.

The ministry is now equipping and furnishing the two villas, under a scheme to help rehabilitate prisoners and ensure family homes are not broken up, local daily Al Raya reported.

Prisoners can spend the full day or four to five hours with their wives and children in the villa that includes a fully equipped kitchen and a living room.

Sources told the daily that the two villas were not meant to replace the two rooms allocated for private times between prisoners and their wives that have been in existence for years.

Prisoners can also use the services of social experts and sit with them for hours to discuss personal matters and find solutions to problems, the daily added.

“The consultations are part of a drive to assist the prisoners,” the sources said. “There are several sports, cultural and artistic activities throughout the year and there are competitions in creative writing and poetry, for instance.”

Workshops to acquire or to boost skills are also conducted by experts, with a focus on carpentry, drawing and computer programming.

Female prisoners have the chance to gain insights into embroidery and knitting, the sources added.
