Doha: Qatar has recalled its ambassador to Egypt “for consultations” following a statement by the Egyptian representative to the Arab League, a foreign ministry official said.

Saad Bin Ali Al Muhannadi, the Director of Arab Affairs at the ministry, said  that a statement by Egypt’s representative Ambassador Tariq Adel was not correct and was not in line with the principles of common Arab action.

According to media report, Adel accused Qatar of supporting terrorism after Doha's representative expressed reservations over a clause in the Arab League communique, which “affirmed the Arab states’ full understanding” of Egypt's decision to carry out air strikes on Daesh positions in Libya following the beheading of 21 Egyptians by the terror group.

However, Al Muhannadi said in remarks carried by the Qatari media on Thursday that Doha rejected the statement and refused to “include the name of Qatar in any failure by the Egyptian government because Qatar would also support the will and stability of the Egyptian people.”

Al Muhannadi added that Qatar stressed its condemnation and denunciation of the criminal act that killed 21 Egyptian nationals in Libya,

He said that Qatar had reservations about the paragraph in the statement issued by Arab League representatives that welcomed the air strikes conducted by Egypt’s air forces.

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Abdul Latif Al Zayani said in a statement he “rejects accusations by Egypt’s permanent envoy at the Arab League that Qatar supports terrorism”.

Al Zayani said the accusations are “unfounded, contradict reality, and ignore the sincere efforts by Qatar as well as the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab states in combatting terrorism and extremism at all levels.”
