Manama: A court in Qatar has fined a divorced couple after they unleashed a string of insults at each other on the telephone and through short mobile messages.

The court said that the former husband must pay QR1,000 for using abusive language, but suspended a one-month jail term in consideration for their children.

The ex-wife was also handed a QR1,000 fine.

According to the case papers, the man sent several abrasive messages to his former wife who retaliated by sending equally offensive messages, local daily Al Raya reported on Tuesday.

The case was filed by the divorcee as she complained that her ex-husband repeatedly called her to insult her.

However, when she decided not to answer his calls, he started texting her abusive messages that reportedly disturbed her. She reported the matter to the public prosecutor and an investigation was launched.

The probe revealed that the ex-wife had also a mobile phone to send equally abrasive messages to her former husband.

A case was filed against both of them for their derogatory and humiliating messages and the court sentenced them to pay the fines.

The paper did not reveal the nationality of the couple.
