Manama: Police in Qatar have launched an investigation into an assault on a Qatar Fuel petrol station employee.

The probe was started after the state-run company contacted the police in the assault case captured on a video clip that went viral.

The 26-second video clip, most likely CCTV footage, shows a man in a white thobe standing next to a large car strike a Woqod (Qatar Fuel) attendant dressed in a blue jumpsuit.

The petrol station employee is seen tripping and falling to the ground where he remains motionless, while another man looks on. The aggressor moves to the front of the vehicle, goes again to the back, and then returns to the front seemingly to drive away.

No details were given about where or when the incident happened.

However, Woqod said in a statement that it moved into action promptly.

“Woqod is committed to the safely of its employees and strongly condemns this unfortunate incident,” the company said in a message posted on its Facebook page. “Woqod took immediate action through the involvement of the police in Doha. The person who punched the Woqod employee has been interviewed by the police and action appropriate to the incident is being taken… this has always been Woqod’s position for all such incidents and has led to successful prosecutions. Such behaviour towards Woqod employees will simply not be tolerated,” the company said.

On social media, bloggers could not determine the nationality of the aggressor, and most reject the claim he was a Qatari national, arguing that many non-Qataris also wear white thobes and drive large cars.

According to the Global Peace Index, Qatar is among the most peaceful countries in the world.
