Muscat: Two Omanis were killed in an accident in which their vehicle turned over in the Al Fajraha area of Samayil province Wednesday afternoon.

An official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) told Gulf News that the accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding. One of the victims died on the spot while the second died one the way to hospital.

In a separate incident, a child sustained severe injuries in a runover accident in Ma’bela area of Seeb province north of the capital Muscat. Reports said the driver of the school bus that hit her did not see the girl as he reversed the bus. Five were killed in road accidents last week nationwide.

Meanwhile, speeding is still the main cause for all the road accidents that occurred in the past three years, according to statistics.

Speeding was blamed for the death of 428 persons and injuring other 1,743 in 2014, compared to 471 deaths and 6,923 injuries in 2013. Driver neglect was second, resulting in the death of 87 and leaving 358 injured, followed by safe distance violations that caused 507 accidents which resulted in 15 dead and 392 injured. In total, 816 persons were killed in road accidents in 2014, compared to 913 persons in 2013, according to the ROP.
