Muscat: Sixty stations to monitor strong seismic movements will be built in Oman this year.
Oman has so far picked four locations in Musandam Governorate and 21 in Muscat Governorate to build those stations.
Other locations will be picked in other governorates nationwide, said Ahmad Daif, a researcher at the Seismological Centre of Sultan Qaboos University.
Another nine stations to monitor seismic activity began operations in Rustaq province recently. All nine stations are working as one integral station to monitor earthquakes in the country.
Four quakes were recorded in areas around Oman last April alone; they occurred between the Sea of Oman and Iran, with no damage or causalities reported. Daif said that successive tremors were due to a moving crack and seismic movements, stressing that the occurrence is normal and not a cause for concern.
