Muscat: The Muscat Primary Court ordered a restaurant shut down for a month on Sunday for serving sandwiches that are unfit for consumption.

The court also slapped a 1,000 riyals (Dh9,531.54) fine on an Asian worker, who admitted to preparing the sandwiches with rotten chicken meat.

The restaurant was caught serving bad food during a surprise inspection by the inspection and control team of Muscat Municipality. The inspectors seized the stock of rotten chicken meat and insect-laden food.

More than 20 restaurants and coffee shops were temporarily shut down nationwide this year for violating food safety regulations.

An official at Muscat Municipality told Gulf News that more than 250 inspections were conducted in October. The official said a number of restaurants and eateries were also booked on charges of flouting health and food safety norms.

He stressed that municipality will not tolerate violators who only think of making quick money,

Last September, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) arrested expatriate vendors who were caught selling expired tea mixed with beer and non-chewable tobacco called ‘afdal’ in Salalah province, south of Oman.
