Muscat: Popular Omani actor Salim Bahwan died on Saturday at the age of 53 after suffering a heart attack.

Condolences have been pouring in for the actor via social media platforms, with hundreds of fans sharing his pictures under the hashtag Salim Bahwan passes away.

Bahwan, who began his career in the 1990s, acted in more than 30 series, 30 plays and three films. He is considered one of the founders of Omani theatre.

His most famous works include Akhar Al Ankood (The Lust Cluster), Walad Al Theeb (The Son of the Wolf), Qeeraha Fi Daftar Mansi (Reading in a Forgotten Book), Bahth An Al Mustaheel (Search For Impossible), Marah Fi Al Omer (Once in a Lifetime) and Mehrah.

He was the first Gulf actor to win an award in Egypt for his role in the television series, Rajel Fi Zaman Al Mustaheel (The Man In Impossible Time).

He also discovered many Omani actors and actresses.

His latest film, Mehrah, produced in 2014, tells the story of two lovers who are separated.
