Muscat: Two Omani policemen were killed in a tragic road accident when their patrol vehicle hit a stray camel in Mudhaibi province, east of Oman, on Wednesday morning.

The vehicle turned over after the crash, killing the two police officers on the spot, the Royal Oman Police said.

They were laid to rest in their hometown of Yanqul province on Wednesday.

Stray camels pose a big threat to road users in Sharqiyah governorate and run-ins with them claim dozens of lives every year as some roads lack the lighting at night as well as barriers to stop animals from crossing the roads.

Twenty-seven people have died in road accidents in August alone. Twenty of them died on the Adam-Salalah road stretch.

Last Friday, four Omanis were killed instantly in a head-on collision between two vehicles in the Auwaifyah area of Adam province.

On average, two people are killed in road accidents every day in Oman.

Oman has one of the highest numbers of road accidents worldwide, with 6,276 crashes recorded in 2015, resulting in more than 675 deaths.

A total of 336 people were killed in 2,100 road accidents nationwide until the end of June this year, according to National Centre for Statistics and Information.
