Muscat: A 20-year-old Omani woman is battling for her life after she shot herself with a traditional gun called the Suktoon in the Awainat area of Sohar province on Thursday.
The woman sustained severe injuries in her stomach in Sohar hospital.
The woman allegedly shot herself after a family dispute, an official from the Royal Oman Police (ROP) told Gulf News.
Despite campaigns asking nationals to regiser unlicensed weapons, many have yet to comply, according to the ROP.
By law, anyone found possessing a gun without a license will be slapped with a fine of 100 rials.
Many Omanis use these guns for hunting as well as decoratie purposes.
