Muscat: Oman’s Royal Hospital has launched “Adolescents Medicine Department”, which is considered one of its kind in the country.

Establishing such a department aims to provide a therapeutic and diagnostic environment for the age category of 10 to 18 years. It also aims to promote community awareness about common diseases that accompany adolescence in terms of symptoms and therapeutic methods and ways of prevention.

The new department also will provide consulting services and guidance to deal with the wrong behaviour that may accompany this age.

The new department will raise the level of awareness among teenagers, both males and females, about good ways to deal with the changes and physical and hormonal upheavals that accompany puberty, said Nahid.

The department will also educate the parents and adolescents about the addiction to electronic devices and social media platforms, which could result in psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, violence and poor academic achievement.

Dr Nahid Jabir, the head of the Adolescents Department at the Royal Hospital, said that Adolescent Medicine that is considered as one of the medical specialities that target individuals between the age of 10 and 18 to provide therapeutic and diagnostic services in various medical fields.

She added that the age group is one of the most important stages of life that draws the behavioural, physical, mental health features of the individual.

Nahid explained that 50 per cent of the estimated 2.4 million Omani population are aged less than 25 years, according to official reports.

The new department will serve all Omani adolescents nationwide, said Nahid.
