Muscat: An Omani man, in his 40s, was arrested for being involved in an obscene video, the Public Prosecution said on Monday.

The video clip that went viral on social media platforms recently showed the man in what was deemed an immoral act.An investigation is under way.

Several arrests have been made recently by authorities in a clamp down on obscene social media content.

The Public Prosecution urged the public to report any inappropriate behaviour on social media, in order to protect children and young people.

Last August, Muscat Primary Court sentenced three youngsters to one year in prison each for being involved in an obscene video. The court also slapped them with a fine of 1,000 riyals (Dh9,540).

In November of last year, an Omani was found guilty of posting revealing pictures of his girlfriend on Instagram and was sentenced to one month in jail and fined 2,000 riyals, half of which was given to his ex-girlfriend as compensation.

The man admitted he posted the pictures in anger after a fight they had.

Article 16 of Oman’s cyber law stipulates that anyone who publishes news or pictures of someone’s private life can be jailed up to one year and fined up to 5,000 riyals.
