Muscat: An official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said that there has been a 70 per cent decline in thefts in October, compared to the same period last year.

Brigadier Rashid Al Badi, the head of the Investigation and Criminal Investigation department at the ROP, said that 176 cases of theft had been reported in October, compared to 593 such crimes in October 2014.

Al Badi added that 148 persons, including 92 Omanis and 56 expatriates, were charged with thefts in October, compared to a total of 210 booked in such cases in October, 2014.

Al Badi said that the vigilance of police and the cooperation of nationals and expatriates in reporting such crimes to the ROP had helped bring about the decline in crime.

It may be recalled that the ROP had launched a campaign entitled ‘Prevention is protection and safety’ in 2013, which the police say has been instrumental in spreading awareness across the country.
