Muscat: Oman’s Ministry of Social Development has temporarily shut down Al Hayat Association on Wednesday following “irregularities”.

Red wax was used to plaster the closure noticed on its doors.

Al Hayat Association is the only a non-governmental organisation that was established to help addicts in the country.

An official at the Ministry of Social Development told Gulf News that State Audit Control had revealed that “some irregularities took place in the association”.

The official didn’t give further details about the matter.

“The association will be opened after completing all the legal actions against those who involved in the violations”, said the official.

Mohammad Al Zadjali, the chairman of the Al Hayat Association, told Gulf News that his association found some irregularities on the part of the Ministry of Social Development itself as well as the previous boards of the associations of the State Audit Control. “We had concrete evidence,” Al Zadjali said.

He says his organisation was shut down as a ‘proactive step to justify its acts’.

He added the Ministry refused to attend meetings to discuss the financial strains of the organisations despite the fact that he contacted the ministry several times to find solutions to their prolems.

Al Hayat Association served hundreds of drug addicts in the country.
