Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have scotched rumours that have been circulated on social media about three vehicles that entered the country loaded with guns.

The ROP also issued a warning to social media users not to circulate wrong news aimed at causing alarm among the public.

The warning came after rumours claiming that the three vehicles with GCC plate numbers were spotted in South and North Batinah went viral on social media.

The rumours also suggested that massive manhunts were conducted to locate the three vehicles.

Security authorities and volunteers guarded some mosques in Muscat and other provinces on Friday to ensure the safety of worshippers and mosques.

Meanwhile, Omanis have launched a campaign entitled ‘Stop rumours’ amid an increase in the number of rumours being posted on social media platforms.

Campaigners sought to impress on members of the public that some rumours could have grave consequences and that the campaign would work through its accounts on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to promptly scotch any rumours.
